Factory-Built Homes Are the Future [Video]

There’s so much media pertaining to green prefab lately, I can hardly keep up!  New World Home co-founder Mark Jupiter was on CNBC recently to discuss modular homes, prefab houses, and the benefits of modular construction relative to traditional site-built homes.  He said, in short: “All houses should be built in a factory. It is the future. And we’re just preempting that and started this company before that future takes hold.”

New World Home, you may recall, is known for modular, traditional homes built to LEED Platinum standards. Examples include this home in Georgia and this home in New York.

The company is currently building six modular homes in the Hamptons and expects to build a shocking 50 homes in 2012, according to CNBC. New World Home typically charges between $165 – $250 per square foot for these green homes.

The Greenest Home in the World [Video]

I was noodling some recent journalist potshots about headlines for “the greenest …” when I landed on this video piece from the Nightly News. NBC’s Kiko Itasaki wonders if this home in Unst, one of the northern Shetland Islands of Scotland, is the greenest in the world. Everyone knows the question has no answer, but I think Michael and Dorothy Rea have accomplished something worth noticing that’s for sure.

The aim of their project, according to the Reas’ website, was to “pilot an approach to carbon-neutral living that can be replicated across the UK and elsewhere.

They built a home from an off-the-shelf kit from Scotframe Timber Frame Engineering (water-tight assembly in 4.5 days by three men). Systems for the home include an air-to-water heat pump with a custom water battery, a heat recovery ventilator, LED lights, solar panels, small wind turbines, and fuel cells that store power for use with a refitted electric Toyota Yaris.

Additionally, the Reas have a 1,000 square-foot, hydroponic greenhouse where they grow food to sustain a vegetarian diet. Apparently some of the food is maintained by minerals and rainwater harvested from the roof, too.

Sweet Pea is a Built Green Tiny Houseboat

This is Sweet Pea, a 550-square foot tiny houseboat in Olympia, Washington.  It’s also the first houseboat certified by Built Green — coming in with 3-Stars — and was built by owner Mike Auderer of Olympia Construction.

Auderer built the hull with 3/4″ of plywood covered by a 1/2″ of fiberglass and the tiny house sits on top of that.  Construction photos are posted on his company’s Facebook page.

Inside the tiny house, there’s an LG washer/dryer combo, two-burner induction cooktop, and several other modern amenities.  Auderer is making these floating houseboats for others, and would sell a version like this for ~$150,000 (turnkey model, just move in).

Behind the Scenes at Sett Studio [Video]

I’ve seen a ton of interest in these panel-built structures by Sett Studio, so I thought it’d be appropriate to share a short video for your viewing pleasure.  In the video, these Austin-based builders share details of the construction, materials, and installation of a typical Sett Studio.  Mike Speciale of Sett Studio also talks about why they use SIP construction and how they’ve tweaked shou-sugi-ban to treat their siding.  For the pretty photos, check the original Sett and the twin Setts.
