Malta Home Maximizes a Small Lot With Cantilevered Design

Located on the tiny island of Malta, this sustainable home by Chris Briffa Architects was designed on a lot only 250 square meters in size. The green-roofed, energy-efficient Hanging Home has turned into a significant design challenge, incorporating the small space with eco-friendly features into this modern yet traditional home.

In order to bypass the zoning challenges of the small lot, nearly half of the house is cantilevered over the outdoor space, with portions of the living and dining rooms literally floating over the outdoor pool on a slab of concrete.

The home uses low-energy radiant floor heating to stay warm in the winter, and stays cool in the summer through natural ventilation. The design allows for plenty of natural daylight and cross ventilation, keeping energy use at a minimum. Overall, the natural materials and strategic design provide a sustainable, energy-efficient home that is simple, stylish, and comfortable.

TINY: A Story About Living Small [Video]

These days, it seems everyone has a hammer and access to plans from Tumbleweed Tiny House, so it may not be all that noteworthy to mention another tiny house build.  But, if you’re willing, let me alert you to this project nearing completion in the next month or so.  The tiny house is being built by Christopher Smith, who bought five acres in Colorado and aims to plant roots with a structure built from scratch.

Smith and crew are documenting the entire endeavor and sharing regular progress online at TINY: A Story About Living Small and on a TINY Facebook page.

I can say I’m captured with the teaser trailer and look forward to watching the whole documentary when it’s released late spring, early summer 2012.  This film is written and produced by Merete Mueller and will include a discussion of tiny living from other Americans in homes smaller than 200 square feet.

First North-West hosepipe ban for 14 years – How to beat the summer hosepipe bans

(PRWEB) July 9, 2010

With United Utiliies announcing it’s first hosepipe ban for the North-West of England in 14 years why not beat the ban and reduce reliance on mains water?

Rainwater is collected from the roof via the downpipes, filtered, stored and then used for non-potable purposes including toilets, washing machines, garden hoses, for cleaning cars and other applications. It is not suitable for baths, showers or washing dishes.

Nu-Heat supplies below-ground tanks, which have the advantage of being unaffected by temperature extremes such as summer heat or freezing conditions. The tanks have a flat, two cylinder design that requires less excavation than other products and offers greater flexibility. They are made of durable plastic.

Sizing depends on a number of considerations such as the average amount of rainfall, the number of occupants and the size of the roof. Tanks are available in two sizes, 3500L and 5000L. If required, two tanks can be fitted together very simply to increase storage capacity to 7000L or 10,000L.

Nu-Heat’s three packages give a flexible solution for individual properties:

Package 1 with an integrated filter suitable for roof sizes up to 150m2
Package 2 with an external filter suitable for roof sizes up to 350m2
Garden package with an inbuilt filter basket and its own jet pump
The range enables Nu-Heat to specify the best solution for any property.

Rainwater harvesting plays its part in helping to achieve required levels of the Code for Sustainable Homes. When level 5 comes into force, rainwater harvesting will be a prerequisite.

Summer Vacation: Three US Destinations for Family Fun

Orlando, Florida (PRWEB) May 22, 2007

Looking for some fun for the whole family this summer? Whether looking to hit the beach, head to the world’s most magical destination or enjoy some wholesome family fun on one of the greatest lakes, there are three great options for families looking to plan the ultimate vacation with children of all ages and interests.

Lounging Lakeside

These days it’s hard to imagine, but there was a time when life was simpler and families looked forward to summer vacation as a chance to spend quality time together. Grand Traverse Resort & Spa, located along the shores of Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay, boasts a summer lake resort atmosphere where wholesome family fun and beautiful scenery are sure to help families reconnect.

Whether canoeing on local rivers, swimming at the Resort’s Beach Club, visiting a nearby orchard or farm to pick fruit, savoring s’mores at the evening bonfire, or fishing at a local hotspot, children are sure to discover that television and text messaging are overrated.

Named one of the nation’s best family resorts, Grand Traverse Resort & Spa has over $ 12 million in recent property-wide renovations and offers cherry-inspired spa services for mom and teen daughters, three championship golf courses for dad, and fun-filled water sports for kids of all ages. The resort also has programs for younger children to enjoy crafts, games and story time, while older children participate in exciting day camp experiences.

Home Away from Home

Families make lots of sacrifices when traveling together, whether it’s time, space, comfort, or even privacy. For those heading to sunny Orlando this summer, don’t sweat it. Here’s an affordable and family-friendly alternative that’s guaranteed to bring everyone together, sacrifice-free, under one spacious roof: All Star Vacation Homes.

The deal: rather than booking multiple hotel rooms, Orlando visitors can bond in a fully furnished vacation home that’s located less than four miles from Walt Disney World. Multiple bedrooms mean privacy and preference when it comes to bedtime for all ages, and a fully equipped kitchen saves on the time and costs associated with dining out.

Imagine coming home after a long, magical day at the Orlando theme parks and kicking back together in a private pool. Or crawling into your pajamas and gathering to watch a DVD in a cinema-style home theater room.

Whether a family is large or small, All Star offers 150 homes in every size and price range. Starting at $ 119 a night, guests can choose from two- and three-bedroom condos and town homes to seven-bedroom Estate homes.

Additionally, both kids and parents can enjoy the vacation planning process itself by working together to choose their favorite home online. or 800-592-5568

Reggae Icon, Beres Hammond, Returns To North America “For The Love Of It” Summer Tour

New York, NY (PRWEB) July 25, 2010

Jamaican musical legend and Grammy nominated singer, songwriter, and producer Beres Hammond’s “For The Love Of It” 2010 Tour kicked off in Florida last week and will continue throughout the U.S. and Canada making stops in 35 cities including Atlanta (July 30), Washington, DC (August 1), New York (August 6,7 & 8), San Francisco (August 27), Los Angeles (August 29) and wrapping back in Florida’s West Palm Beach (Sept 12). Joining Hammond on the tour will be Kenyatta Hill & Culture and Inner Circle.

Known to many as the originator of “lover’s rock,” Hammond has been writing, producing and pouring out his smoky-sweet voice over every kind of riddim track for over three decades. He continues to top the charts, most recently with the 2008 release A MOMENT IN TIME which Allmusic called “another fine album from one of Jamaica’s finest singers” He has sold out some of the country’s largest venues including New York’s Radio City Music Hall.

The single “I Feel Good” from A MOMENT IN TIME has remained in the Top 5 on reggae charts since the release. Hammond can also be found on the summer’s must-have reggae compilation REGGAE GOLD 2010, along with other chart toppers as Damian Marley and Nas, Shaggy, Etana and Gyptian. VP Records recently reissued Hammond’s 1979 JUST A MAN, which has been praised as a “triumphant reissue.”
