Wood Fiber Insulation Arrives in the USA

Looks like wood-fiber insulation board is coming to the USA, according to a Greenbuild update on Green Building Advisor.  Agepan THD is the name of the product and it’s used as exterior sheathing for walls and roofs.  Agepan boards connect in tongue and groove fashion and insulate to R-5.74 per panel (2″ x 74.5″ x 23-5/8″).  The material has a high permeability (18 U.S. perms) and can be used in a wall assembly to dry to the exterior.  It’s offered through Washington-based The Small Planet Workshop Store.

Colored Solar Panels Hit California Market

I really like the dark-blue/black look of solar PV, but I suppose there may be someone that needs a different color, whether for aesthetics, compliance, or branding, etc.  Colored Solar is trying to grab a toehold in this market with red, emerald green, forest green, and polished marble panels.  In terms of panel efficiency, NREL found there is little performance compromised for a 16%+ efficiency colored 225W panel, according to Colored Solar.

The solar panels have ETL safety certification to UL1703 and a listing by the California Energy Commission, said Colored Solar in a company release.

The Stylish Solar Panels are produced and assembled in the USA and come with a 5-year workmanship and 25-year power warranty.  Colored Solar CEO Michael Mrozek said: “Our customers can be comfortable knowing that our panels have been tested to ETL’s respected standards and will meet and qualify for all rebates and tax incentives … our game changing colored solar panels are built to a higher standard.

Low-VOC Light Sheetrock for Easy Install

It turns out lighter gypsum wallboard sells well.  In July 2010, USG Corporation tested the market for Sheetrock UltraLight panels, which are anywhere from 15-24 pounds lighter per panel depending on the size, and they outsold heavier product, according to NYSE Magazine.  Since then, the panels have rolled out to several Home Depot stores and a 40% lighter joint compound was introduced in January this year.

In terms of green attributes, the non-combustible core is made with recycled content and the face and back paper is 100% recycled.  In addition, the panels qualify as a low-VOC emitting material (i.e., compliant with CA 01350).

But really UltraLight was designed to make it easier to install gypsum.  The panels are harder, up to 30% lighter, and easier to score and snap than standard gypsum, according to USG.  The product has at least 16 reviews at Home Depot and many of the comments reflect that the panels feel light and score easily.

SpinRay Offers UL Listed Solar Appliance

This is the first and only UL-listed, 120-volt, plug-and-play solar kit in the world, according to SpinRay Energy.  The DeckPower120 comes with one, 240-watt solar panel and can be hung on a deck or elsewhere outdoors using a simple mount bracket.  The system allows for up to 1,300 watts of AC power with five solar panels and should qualify for available federal (and sometimes state) tax credits.

Upon installation and plugging into a standard 120-volt outlet (with a continuous use cover), the DeckPower120 starts producing energy for your home.

Of course, safety is a critical point of discussion when it comes to these DIY-type systems.  SpinRay Energy’s DeckPower120 has UL-listed solar monocrystalline panels and microinverters.  If there’s a loss of power from the utility, the inverter will immediately cease any backfeeding for the safety of line workers.

The DeckPower120 solar appliance is currently sold on Amazon.com for $1,099 and the reviews have been positive from what I’ve seen so far. What do you think?

Reclaimed Barn Wood that is FSC Certified

If you like the look of reclaimed wood — and you might, it’s really popular right now — then Pioneer Millworks should be on your radar.  The company, located in Farmington, New York and McMinnville, Oregon, carries FSC certification for all of its reclaimed wood and has saved more than 21 million board feet of wood from barns, industrial buildings, and the like.  Pioneer Millworks has flooring, siding, paneling, timbers, etc, and it’s all nice stuff.  I could think about where to use these materials all day long.

Behind the Scenes at Sett Studio [Video]

I’ve seen a ton of interest in these panel-built structures by Sett Studio, so I thought it’d be appropriate to share a short video for your viewing pleasure.  In the video, these Austin-based builders share details of the construction, materials, and installation of a typical Sett Studio.  Mike Speciale of Sett Studio also talks about why they use SIP construction and how they’ve tweaked shou-sugi-ban to treat their siding.  For the pretty photos, check the original Sett and the twin Setts.

Roof-Mounted Solar Tracker in Maryland

We’ve mentioned solar-tracking but the systems are usually pictured on a pole in a big grassy yard.  This is a Dual-Panel Tracker by Maryland-based Advanced Technology & Research Corp. (ATR) on the roof of a row house in Federal Hill in Baltimore.  The install consists of two panels, 235-watts each, on a sun tracking mount with a GPS-controlled drive unit that follows the sun to yield about 30% more than fixed panels.

Nexus EnergyHomes, builder of NZE homes in Maryland, put the system on a homeowner’s house to get about a 20% reduction in the electrical bill.  Over time, the homeowner can add more and reach net-zero energy with roughly five DPTs.

Additionally, as it turns out, the homeowner is one of the engineers at ATR.  The company designed the home-unit DPT for easy installation on a pole or simple wooden post and this installation will be a good way to provide more documentation for the savings that can had with a roof-mounted solar tracker.
