The Rieteiland House in Amsterdam, The Netherlands is a breathtaking piece of architecture created by Hans van Heeswijk Architects.

Designed on a newly established island’s plot of land, the box-like design features three floors and a basement with panoramic views of the beautiful surrounding landscape. The street-facing facade is clad in aluminum siding with sections that open up to display windows, and the water-facing side is made completely of glass and sliding doors. Each level has a panoramic view toward the west, the water, and the park, offering sunset views from every level.

Special attention has been given to the sustainability features of this home, including some of the furniture, which was custom-made to accommodate the design. Thermal energy storage, a cold and heat pump, and solar collectors are all used to maximize energy efficiency and cut down on the home’s footprint.

Sunset Idea House Prefab in Healdsburg

The Sunset Magazine Idea House that I mentioned a few months ago will open for public tours on August 3, 2012.  Located in Healdsburg, California, the $2.65 million green prefab has 3,000 square feet and a 480-square-foot guest house with a total of five bedrooms and five bathrooms, according to Healdsburg Patch.  The Idea House was fabricated by Blu Homes, developed by Rosemary Wardell, and designed on the inside by Sharon Portnoy.  Drop by and tell us what you think if you get the opportunity to visit the Idea House.

A Shady Trellis Wall That is Also Edible

Lindsey Hutchinson and husband Todd — both with design backgrounds and a passion for gardening — decided to build “green curtains” or exterior trellises covered in edible vines, according to the Statesman.  The 15-foot living walls will shade the home and rain barrels from the sun, but the Hutchinson’s also intend to harvest the vines for grapes, passionfruit, and Scarlet Runner Beans.  Thusly, these green curtains perform double duty in the form of food production and energy conservation.  What a great idea!

Breezehouse is the New Sunset Idea House

Last year Sunset Magazine chose a container home as the Idea House, but this year prefab is taking over with an energy-efficient Breezehouse from Blu Homes.  The home will be built in Blu’s Vallejo factory on the West Coast and can be seen at a “Factory Preview” on Saturday, April 21, 2012, from 1-3 pm (RSVP here).  After that, it’ll be shipped to Healdsburg, California, and open for tours in August 2012.  We’ll try to follow up with more detail when the home is complete.

Visual Inspiration for Your Next Project

I signed up for Pinterest a long time ago and have enjoyed scanning other pins for visual inspiration.  The site is exploding, and we’re getting more visits — you can follow current pins here — from Pinterest readers every month in our server logs.  I should’ve used it to plan out my Water-Wise Bath Redo but I kind of had an idea already going into that project.  My next project will definitely get a Pinterest board, though.  If you’re on there, link up and let’s keep it going.
