Minibox is a Prefab Tiny House by Ideabox

Oregon-based Ideabox, the company behind Aktiv with IKEA Portland, recently shared news of an expanded endeavor called Minibox.  Minibox is actually a series of “minihomes” built to RV and park model codes.  The tiny-house series has designs ranging from a 200 square-foot studio to a 320 square-foot one-bedroom/one-bath cottage.  And you can bet Ideabox will continue to plug all the green stuff inside.  Pricing for the non-wheel version starts at $42,500.

Prefab Eco-Friendly Tiny Studio in Austin

As a follow up to our recent article about prefabs and tiny houses by ClearSpace Homes, I want to share this 182-square foot studio already built by the company. It’s a showroom for ClearSpace Homes, outfitted with a concealed fastener steel siding, Hardie lap siding, zero-VOC paints, strand woven bamboo floors, soy-based spray foam insulation, white modified rubber roofing, LED lighting, CFL lights, and reclaimed wood detail. The studio, which costs about $28,500, includes a built in desk, microwave, fridge, and storage.

ClearSpace Keeps Prefab Simple in Austin

Austin-based ClearSpace Homes has been around for several years, but recently I noticed the founder, Hayden Lindley, was working on some new designs.  One of those is the 504-square-foot efficiency unit, pictured, which is finished on the outside with lap siding and cement board.  Lindley is noodling this prefab design and others and wants to produce some new in-house plans with an accurate ballpark cost attached.

Which is to say, all prefabs have custom elements, but ClearSpace wants to be able to service the tweaks without killing the client with hefty design fees.  So long as the client is serious, ClearSpace expects to deliver their homes with customization for about $125 per square foot, not including foundation, site work, and shipping.

That price includes a list of standards, including strand-woven bamboo flooring, spray-foam insulation, zero-VOC paints, dimmable CFLs, LED lighting accents, custom- or IKEA-built cabinetry, Kohler tubs and toilets, efficient aluminum windows, James Hardie products, on-demand water heating, and a mini-split for heating and cooling.

ClearSpace is focused on customers in the Austin area right now, though they’d entertain developments or mass orders in any state.  You can see some of their existing plans online and some new renderings on the ClearSpace Facebook page.

Twin SIP Panel Sett Studios in Austin

Several months ago, I shared photos of a tiny studio shed by Texas-based Sett Studio and want to share details of cool new project by the same firm in same area.  Sett Studio recently worked with The Goodlife Team, a local real estate company, and created these two studios that are now being used as extra space for the company’s expanding East Austin offices.

You may catch a glimpse of several naked Plumen CFLs hanging in these offices.  Mike Speciale of Sett Studio told me his company is using these on a regular basis now because the bulbs “add an artistic look without the bulk of a full light fixture.

The Goodlife Team studios — one is 12′ x 12′ (144 square feet) and the other is 12′ x 14′ (168 square feet) — were built with floor-to-ceiling Ply Gem windows and structural insulated panels for the walls, floor, and roof.  Sett Studios installed the tiny structures in about four days, as documented here.

The twins are joined by a white cedar deck and clad in a mixture of U-channel galvalume and yellow pine style siding with a shou-sugi-ban treatment.  It’s a great look, the combination of charred wood and textured metal, worth pinning if you have an exteriors board like mine on Pinterest.

Sett Studio fabricates their studios off-site within 45 days of contract signing and installs them in two days.  They have models of various sizes and prices, but to give you an idea, a couple studios like the ones purchased by The Goodlife Team will run about $55,000, including the deck.

Austin 360 Roofing Now Offering Spray-On Radiant Heat Barrier to Significantly Reduce Energy Costs for Central Texas Homes and Businesses

Austin, TX (PRWEB) July 9, 2009

Austin 360 Roofing, a leading, Texas-based roofing company, has extended its energy efficiency product and service offerings to central Texas customers by supplying a spray-on radiant heat barrier. The company has partnered with STS Coatings to immediately begin delivering HeatBloc Ultra.

“Radiant heat barriers are a proven solution for lowering energy costs, especially for homes in warm climates like Central Texas,” said Eric Trybala, president of Austin 360 Roofing. “And with its ability to be sprayed on to the underside of the roof, HeatBloc Ultra can be easily and safely applied in enclosed areas like attics. HeatBloc Ultra is an industry leading radiant heat barrier, and a great addition to Austin 360 Roofing’s service offerings.”

Radiant barriers are reflective materials that block heat transfer and reduce solar energy from penetrating roofs and increasing the temperature in homes and businesses. They are normally installed on the underside of a roof and reflect most solar heat upwards. This means that very little radiant heat is emitted down into the structure, essentially keeping a building shaded from the sun.

Austin 360 Roofing is offering HeatBloc Ultra as its radiant heat barrier of choice because it adds the benefit of being able to be sprayed on to the underside of roof decks, rafters, ridge and gable ends. By applying a thin, even coat to these surfaces, up to 75 percent of the potential radiant energy transfer into the attic can be blocked, significantly reducing air conditioning costs.

HeatBloc Ultra also does not degrade over time, like traditional foil-based radiant heat barriers which can tear and can accumulate dust, diminishing effectiveness. Also unlike foil-based barriers, it does not block cell phone, antennae, or dish signals. HeatBloc Ultra is permeable to water, and does not trap water vapor within roof decks or sidewalls, an important consideration in warm attic conditions where water damage can be particularly detrimental.

“STS Coatings has a long history of supplying high-quality radiant heat barriers and other roofing materials to Central Texas residents,” said Cayce Kovacs, President of STS Coatings. “We are proud to be working with quality applicators such as Austin 360 Roofing.”
