Located in Wuxi, China, the WFH House by Arcgency is made of three shipping containers combined to create this beautiful Nordic-style home. The sloping green roof sits atop an open, spacious interior, which is made of a single container on one side and a stacked set on the other. The style can be customized for various climates, layouts, and plots of land.

The containers are lined with insulation covered in bamboo, and the central space is airy and open with skylights that fill the area with natural light. The second floor consists of bedrooms for the kids, with a giant glass curtain overlooking the living area.

The roof is lined with lush greenery that filters rainwater and provides natural insulation, along with solar cells and sustainable bamboo draped along the exterior. The home is a simple, cost-efficient modular design, especially for those living in areas with extreme heat or a high risk of earthquakes.

The building components are simple and minimal, and undergo a graceful aging process that minimizes wear and tear and reduces maintenance costs.

Golden Gate Valley Library Reaches LEED Gold Status

When the Golden Gate Valley Library of San Francisco was renovating and updating to accommodate the Americans with Disabilities Act, the organization figured it was also time to green up the space and achieve LEED Silver for Commercial Interiors status. The building has since reached LEED Gold status.

Tom Eliot Fisch and Paulett Taggart Architects worked together on the project, performing a number of eco-friendly upgrades. Rather than adding a ramp or addition to the street-facing exterior, the team used a courtyard on the side of the building for a contemporary style, wheelchair-accessible glass and aluminum elevator.

The team also replaced windows with the most access to sunlight with high-performance glazing to reduce solar heat gain, and restored and cleaned the rest for added efficiency while maintaining the historical structure. They also added in a high efficiency mechanical system and energy efficient lighting to reduce energy use while improving comfort for visitors. Low flow faucets reduce water use, and low VOC paints and finishes improve air quality. Existing furniture was restored, and a photovoltaic rooftop system meets 25% of the energy demand.

To top it all off there is also an improved bike parking area, a new teen area, and improved accessibility for visitors with disabilities. The reservations, completed in 2011, have received several awards for its sustainable preservation of the building, originally built in 1918.

Platinum Home with a California View

This is the Tiburon Bay House, a stunning LEED Platinum home owned by Helene Marsh in the San Francisco Bay area.  It was designed by Butler Armsden Architects and built by McDonald Construction & Development, Inc., the same company behind a couple other high-profile LEED Platinum homes — the Margarido House and the Hillside House.  Tiburon Bay House replaces a 1,500 square-foot home that was deconstructed by hand with 95% of the material going to reuse or recycling.

Tiburon Bay House has some deep green elements.  For example, there’s a 5 kW solar photovoltaic system that provides 80% of electrical needs and a solar hot water system that provides 100% of the domestic hot water needs.

Beyond the solar panels, this place was designed with the mechanical functions in the core stairway area in order to preserve unencumbered exterior views.  The bedroom and living areas, as pictured, all feature stunning water and bridge views. Also, the orientation of the home, together with the overhangs, optimize natural heating, cooling, and daylighting.

Tiburon Bay House was built with a combination of recycled steel, LVL, timberstrand, FSC-certified wood, and OSB.  The foundation has a minimum of 30% fly ash and recycled aggregate.

Otherwise, the LEED Platinum home earned 114 points and has rainwater harvesting (for toilets and the washing machine), graywater collection (for irrigation), high-efficiency irrigation, a permeable hardscape, Energy Star appliances, LED and fluorescent lighting, smart house automation, zero-VOC paints, and in-floor hydronic heating, etc.

Orlando area homebuyers and investors spend $ 10.1 million on foreclosed properties auctioned by REDC Saturday at the World Center Marriott

Event was Day 2 of REDC’s 6-Day, 8-City auction series featuring 1,500 foreclosures in Ft. Myers, Orlando, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa and Jacksonville. More than $ 14 million has been spent thus far in the auction campaign.

Irvine, Calif. — Orlando area homebuyers and investors spent $ 10.1 million on foreclosed properties Saturday at the World Center Marriott as 139 foreclosures were auctioned by REDC before an overflow crowd of 625.

More than 20 foreclosures sold for less than $ 35,000.

The auction was Day 2 of REDC’s 6-Day, 8-City auction series featuring 1,500 foreclosures in Ft. Myers, Orlando, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa and Jacksonville. More than $ 14 million has been spent thus far in the auction campaign. Miami, Florida – Miami homebuyers and investors spent $ 9.3 million on area foreclosures Sunday at REDC’s home auction before an overflowing crowd of 550 at the Miami Convention Center, the company announced today. The $ 9.3 million is the highest at a Miami foreclosure auction this year and slightly less than the 2010 record set the day before in Orlando, when $ 10.1 million was spent on foreclosures at a REDC auction.

The auction is part of a huge 6-day, 8-city auction series featuring a near U.S. record of 1,500 foreclosures throughout Florida. REDC’s current Florida auction campaign has thus far generated $ 23 million. The auctions are geared to fuel the local economy.
